Adults with Special Needs Thrive in These Employment Stories

Published On

A sense of purpose and positive feedback is important for everyone, including adults with special needs. That’s why Coral Reef advocates for meaningful employment for adults of all abilities.

Research shows that adults with disabilities thrive when they’re employed. In fact, 22.5% of people with a disability were employed in 2023. Not only can a job foster a sense of belonging and instill feelings of accomplishment, it also may allow for new skills development and greater independence. With a job, these individuals will have the opportunity to go outside of their comfort zone and expand their social network and experiences. To demonstrate just how valuable working is for adults with special needs, we’ve compiled a few inspiring employment stories below.

Providing Office Support for the City of Bellevue in Washington

Jesse’s first job was with the Eurest Dining Services in Bellevue, WA. Once he learned some basic computer skills, he landed employment with the Utilities Department of the City of Bellevue as well as the City Attorney’s Department. In his positions, he performed a variety of data entry and administrative tasks. Jesse’s work experience has led to meaningful friendships and has done wonders for his self-esteem. Thanks to Jesse’s job, he was able to feel more confident interacting and building relationships with new people outside of his family.

Leveraging an Internship to Land Part-time Employment in Florida

Izzy secured an internship at an assisted living facility in Florida. Throughout her internship, she prepared food, served it to residents, and cleaned the dining room and kitchen. Her internship experience led to a part-time job as a server and cleaner at Champions' Choice, a student dining hall at the University of South Florida. She has developed her interpersonal skills and built meaningful relationships with students and co-workers. Her improved interpersonal skills helped her become a strong communicator and speak her mind in both personal and professional situations.
