After Connie’s first husband suddenly passed away, she was forced to figure out what the future would look like for herself and her two daughters, Crystal and Coral. Coral was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, and as Connie was exploring long-term living options for her, she couldn’t find anything that provided all the support and services she was hoping for.
In 2013, she thought, “How about a duplex with another family?” Over time, she thought bigger and bigger until the concept of Coral Reef was born in order to provide a safe, modern space for adults with special needs to live independently. Through this project, Connie hopes to bring peace of mind to families with adult family members with special needs.
While she has a team to support her, Connie considers herself a “jack of all trades” because she is heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of Coral Reef. She is looking forward to seeing how her efforts will bring joy and happiness to residents once the facility is fully operational.
“Having first hand experience and daily interventions with Coral makes it clear what we can do and what needs to be done,” says Connie. She has already had the pleasure of meeting families who are excited to introduce their loved ones with special needs to this unique, comprehensive living concept.
Connie designed Coral Reef to be in a prime location, just outside Grand Rapids and near all the major highways, giving residents and their families easy access to just about everything they may need. Grocery stores, hospitals, Special Olympics Michigan and Kent Trails are all within walking distance.
What started as an idea a decade ago is becoming a reality, thanks to unwavering community and individual groundwork. Connie’s husband, Robert Barto, has been an ever-enthusiastic support system for Connie, and remains a source of encouragement as plans come to fruition.
“Coral Reef is truly a one-stop-shop that offers all the modern conveniences, safety and security one could want for their family members with special needs,” says Connie. She explains that it’s not just a place to “lay your head.” Residents can take advantage of a number of resources, like attorneys and financial planners who will work together to make the transition to independent living as smooth as possible and set them up for success.
Connie believes that the Grand Rapids community is the ideal place for Coral Reef due to its abundance of philanthropy and incredibly caring individuals. While Coral Reef will likely begin housing residents from Grand Rapids and other parts of Michigan, Connie is hopeful that it will expand to include residents from around the country.
When asked to describe Coral Reef in one word, Connie said, “Humbling.”
“I’m amazed by our community,” she adds. “So many people have stepped up to help.”
