Meet Coral, the Face Behind Coral Reef

Coral Reef, an empowering, independent housing community in Grand Rapids, was inspired by Coral Lettinga, who was diagnosed with autism as a toddler. Coral grew up with her twin sister, Crystal, and the two developed a special connection and a bond like no other.

“I have fond memories of Coral jumping off the diving board and somehow managing not to get her hair wet. She was always a better swimmer than me and any body of water made her happy,” explains Crystal. Crystal also recalls Dakota, the therapeutic horse that she and Coral would take turns riding.

Even though Coral is non-verbal, Crystal never had any issues translating her big words and phrases. “The faster Coral talks, the easier it is for me to understand her,” jokes Crystal.

Crystal and Connie, the twins’ mother, believe that Coral Reef will change Coral’s life for the better.

Paving the Way for More Independence

“Coral Reef will give Coral the opportunity to get out there and make connections with adults other than family members. It will also allow her to enjoy her own space,” says Connie. Crystal agrees and notes that independent living will open doors to more freedom and autonomy.

In five, 10 and 15 years from now, Crystal sees Coral joining a horseback riding community, listening to music and dancing. “She loves jumping and moving her hands independently but on time and beat. She’s the most coordinated little kid I’ve met,” says Crystal.

Connie agrees with Crystal in that Coral Reef will provide Coral with the resources she needs to build a community and live her best life. “Adults with special needs deserve the same amount of grace and room to express and be themselves as others. They may not have the same say in their destinies, but they still deserve opportunities,” explains Connie.

The Ideal Environment for Adults with Special Needs

At Coral Reef, residents like Coral will have easy access to modern conveniences, plus connections to a plethora of professionals and resources that will be instrumental in their success for years to come.

While designing their vision for Coral Reef, Connie and Crystal took many of Coral’s likes and dislikes into consideration. For example, Coral loves music and singing, so they plan to incorporate both activities into the community.
